Fixing the NVIDIA 8600M GT

My Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop came with a nVidia which I figured would be decent for gaming because of the DX10 support. Little did I know that on most of the games I played, the 8600M GT would lock up preiodically for several seconds, normally resulting in my death in Call of Duty 4 of Battlefield 2142.

I sent two months trying to figure out how to fix this, then I came across a website dedicated to Laptop Drivers. I did a little research and I found the fix for my problem and when I applied it, PRESTO! No more crashes, at least I haven’t experienced one in the past 4 months.

The fix is located here and it consists of upgrading the NVIDIA 8600M GT drivers to ForceWare X 169.09 for Windows Vista. These drivers are made by the community and are not officially supported by NVIDIA, but they work none-the-less. Detailed instructions for applying the upgrade can be found at the Support section of the forum post, and yes you do have to use the modded inf file.

  1. I keep listening to the news speak about getting free online grant applications so I have been looking around for the best site to get one.
